In this post, we have explained the complete eligibility to appear for the Maharashtra State Eligibility Test (SET). The relaxation in eligibility conditions and qualifying criteria is as per UGC notifications. However, the qualifying slots are determined based on the reservation policy prevalent in Maharashtra State.
What is the Eligibility to appear for the Maharashtra SET?
1. The candidates must have a Master’s Degree recognized by UGC in a subject of SET. Candidates having a Post Graduate diploma/certificate awarded by an Indian University/Institute, or a foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by a foreign University/Institute, should, in their own interest, ascertain the equivalence of their diploma/degree/certificate with a Master’s degree of recognized Indian Universities from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi (www.aiu.ac.in).
2. Candidates other than SC/ST/OBC/DT(VJ)/NT/SEBC/Transgender/PwD/Orphans, who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in their Master’s or equivalent examination, are eligible for this test. OBC/DT(VJ)/NT/SEBC candidates (belonging to the non-creamy layer) and SC/ST/Transgender/PwD/Orphan candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in their Master’s or equivalent examination are eligible for this test.
3. Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course, or who have appeared for their qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited, or whose qualifying examination has been delayed, may also apply for this test. However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for Assistant Professor only after they have passed their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST/PwD/Orphan/Transgender and OBC/DT(A)/NT(B)/NT(C)/NT(D)/SEBC [non-creamy layer only] candidates). Such candidates must complete their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination within two years from the date of the SET result, with the required percentage of marks. Candidates who fail to communicate this within the stipulated period shall be treated as disqualified.
Note: Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/DT(A)(VJ)/NT(B, C, D)/SEBC, including PwD and Orphans, must ensure that they hold a valid category certificate from the Government of Maharashtra and Goa. As per the reservation policy of the states of Maharashtra and Goa, only candidates domiciled in these states can avail reservation benefits. Other state-reserved-category candidates must therefore write “General Category” in their online application form. Failure to do so will be treated as an offense. Since the result of SET is provisional, if such candidates mistakenly qualify under a reserved category, they will be treated as disqualified.
Who is not eligible to appear for Maharashtra SET?
1. Candidates who are studying in the first year of a two-year Master’s course, or in the first two semesters of a four-semester Master’s course, or in the fourth year of a five-year Integrated Master’s course, are not eligible to appear for this test.
2. A candidate who has already qualified SET in a subject will not be allowed to appear again for SET in the same subject. Candidates violating this rule will be liable for legal action and will not be issued a certificate.
3. As per UGC rules, candidates who have passed M.Sc. (by PPPR/Research) are not eligible to appear for SET.
What to do if a candidate’s post-graduate subject is not included in the list of SET subjects?
Candidates can appear for SET only in the subject of their post-graduation. If a candidate’s post-graduate subject is not included in the list of SET subjects, they may appear for SET in a related or equivalent subject. If there is no related subject in the SET subject list, such candidates may appear for UGC-NET/Joint CSIR-UGC NET (as per UGC updated guidelines, 2023, for SET).
Important Points to Remember:
g. Candidates are not required to send any certificates or documents in support of their eligibility, nor a printout of their application form or confirmation page, to the Nodal Agency. However, candidates must, in their own interest, ensure their eligibility for the test. If any ineligibility is detected by the Nodal Agency at any stage, the candidature will be cancelled, and the candidate shall be liable for legal action. The Nodal Agency does not verify the information provided by candidates in their application form; hence, the candidature of all applicants is purely provisional, subject to fulfillment of the eligibility criteria.
The SET Nodal Agency will not issue a mark sheet to qualified or non-qualified candidates. Students should note that there is a provision for online verification of M-SET results by employers. The SET Unit will issue an e-certificate to qualified candidates based on the information provided by the candidate in the online application form
Is there an age limit to apply for Maharashtra SET?
No. There is no upper age limit to apply for SET.
